Rockwater People: Senior Staff

Dr Roger Passmore, Principal Hydrogeologist, founded Rockwater in 1974 following previous experience as a hydrogeologist with the Geological Survey of Western Australia, Anaconda Inc., and McPhar Geophysics Pty Ltd. He has an extensive knowledge of the hydrogeology of Western Australia and has worked on water supply, mine dewatering, and other projects throughout Western Australia, other states and overseas. Dr Passmore conducts field investigations, project management, aquifer modelling, and technical assessments.

Mr Phil Wharton, Principal Hydrogeologist, joined Rockwater in 1982 and has over 25 years professional experience in hydrogeology. Mr Wharton is widely experienced in water supply and mine dewatering studies and is one of the foremost groundwater modellers in Western Australia. His experience also includes projects in New Zealand (where he managed all Rockwater projects), Laos, and Indonesia.

Mr Grant Bolton, Principal Groundwater Professional, has been with Rockwater since 1980 following several years experience with major mining companies. Mr Bolton is widely experienced in applied hydrogeology; including groundwater geophysics, artesian bore design and construction, aquifer testing, and groundwater sampling. He has designed and supervised the installation of production bores to depths greater than 1,000 m. Mr Bolton has carried out hydrogeological investigations and managed many hydrogeological projects throughout Western Australia over the past 24 years. He also manages all down-hole and surface geophysical services provided by Rockwater.

Mr John Moncrieff, Principal Hydrogeologist, joined Rockwater in 2003 and has over 25 years experience in project design, implementation and management in a wide variety of hydrogeological environments. He has particular expertise in groundwater resources assessment and groundwater supplies in urban, rural and mining areas; design and implementation of mine dewatering schemes; investigation of groundwater contamination; environmental impact assessment with respect to groundwater and surface water; and groundwater licensing.

Ms Karen Johnston, Senior Environmental Hydrogeologist, has over 10 years experience in geochemistry and aquifer storage and recovery systems (ASR). Ms Johnston specialises in artificial aquifer recharge, groundwater chemistry and the application of hydrogeological principles to environmental issues, such as the fate and movement of contaminants in groundwater systems. She is regularly employed in ASR and water quality projects and has designed and managed a number of groundwater monitoring programmes that assess water quality, in-situ chemical reactions and degree of contamination.

Mr Kelvin Olzard, Principal Hydrogeologist and Manager of Rockwater Townsville, Queensland since 2005. Mr Olzard has over 18 years experience as a geologist in the mining industry with extensive exposure to exploration and mining projects across Australia. Between 1999 and 2005 he was Superintendent Geology at WMC’s Phosphate Hill Operation where he was responsible for project and contract management, liaison with Government regulatory authorities and statutory reporting. Since establishing the Townsville office of Rockwater Pty Ltd in January 2005 he has been providing groundwater consulting services throughout Queensland, including groundwater exploration and assessment, groundwater modelling, groundwater quality monitoring, mine dewatering and environmental impact studies.

Mr Manfred Thienenkamp, Senior Hydrogeochemist/Environmental Scientist at Rockwater Townsville, Queensland since February 2008. Mr Thienenkamp has experience in assessing the numerous aspects of soil, surface and groundwater contamination and contaminant migration. He is in the process of finishing his doctoral studies in the hydrogeochemical development of mining lakes. Previous experience includes conducting environmental and groundwater investigations for the North Queensland resource industry, for councils and private entities. He has experience in groundwater resource assessments, dewatering studies, Contaminated Site Assessments, Acid Sulfate Soils assessments and remediation and  landfill studies.
